With the warm weather among us, more of our skin is being exposed, and for longer periods of time. Overexposure to the sun’s UV rays can severely damage our skin and the underlying tissues. To protect ourselves against the sun’s harmful UV rays, the American Cancer Society recommends the use of sunscreen. UVA rays can cause DMA damage to skin cells deep underneath the surface and increase the risk of malignant melanomas, while UVB rays burn the skin surface.

There are two different categories of sunscreen based on their action: chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays while physical sunscreens reflect them. Physical sunscreens (containing titanium dioxide and zinc oxide) block a wider range of UVA/UVB rays, offering the skin more sun protection without the potentially irritating chemicals. Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide do not break down as quickly as the ingredients in chemical sunscreens, reducing the need for reapplication throughout the day.

Some concern lies with sunscreens that contain nanoparticles (between 1 and 100 nanometers) of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, as these particles small enough to absorb into the skin and enter skin cells and cause damage. However, as non-nanoparticles, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are safe and sit on the skin’s surface to reflect UVA and UVB.

SPF (Sun Protection Factor) measures the power of the sunscreen’s effectiveness against UVB rays, and is calculated by comparing the time needed for someone to burn with and without a particular sunscreen. For example, if it takes 10 minutes to burn unprotected, wearing a SPF 30 should protect the skin up to 30 times longer (300 minutes). Higher SPF means longer protection, however it is still extremely important to look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against UVA as well as UVB.

-          On cosmetic product labels, you will most likely see the following parabens listed: methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben. . The concern with parabens is their known effect to disrupt hormone function, which is linked to an increased risk of breast cancer and reproductive toxicity. Parabens on the skin surface (via lotions, for example) may react with the sun’s UVB rays, aging the skin and causing DNA damage.

PETROCHEMICALS

-          Extremely commonplace in cosmetic products, petrochemicals (by-products of petroleum) are often found in: fragrances, lip gloss (petroleum oil is often used as a base), nail polish, soaps, body lotions.  Petrochemicals are known to cause numerous health issues, ranging from skin rashes to cancer and liver, kidney, and nervous system toxicity. DBP (Dibutyl Phthalate) in particular has been linked with birth defects and lifelong reproductive impairments.

HEAVY METALS

-          Lead is a proven neurotoxin linked to troubles in learning, language, and behavior, as well as miscarriage and reduced fertility in both men and women. Mercury, a toxin readily absorbed by the skin, is linked to nervous system, reproductive, immune and respiratory toxicity, and is especially dangerous during fetal development. Nanoparticles of zinc and titanium dioxide are potentially dangerous when inhaled or absorbed.

FORMALDEHYDE RELEASING PRESERVATIVES

-          DMDM Hydantoin, Urea, and Quaternium-15: these toxins can cause allergic skin reactions, rashes, and are probable carcinogens. Cosmetic products containing formaldehyde releasing preservatives can leak formaldehyde into your body via skin absorption, ingestion, or by releasing formaldehyde into the air you breathe.
