With the warm weather among us, more of our skin is being exposed, and for longer periods of time. Overexposure to the sun’s UV rays can severely damage our skin and the underlying tissues. To protect ourselves against the sun’s harmful UV rays, the American Cancer Society recommends the use of sunscreen. UVA rays can cause DMA damage to skin cells deep underneath the surface and increase the risk of malignant melanomas, while UVB rays burn the skin surface.

There are two different categories of sunscreen based on their action: chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays while physical sunscreens reflect them. Physical sunscreens (containing titanium dioxide and zinc oxide) block a wider range of UVA/UVB rays, offering the skin more sun protection without the potentially irritating chemicals. Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide do not break down as quickly as the ingredients in chemical sunscreens, reducing the need for reapplication throughout the day.

Some concern lies with sunscreens that contain nanoparticles (between 1 and 100 nanometers) of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, as these particles small enough to absorb into the skin and enter skin cells and cause damage. However, as non-nanoparticles, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are safe and sit on the skin’s surface to reflect UVA and UVB.

SPF (Sun Protection Factor) measures the power of the sunscreen’s effectiveness against UVB rays, and is calculated by comparing the time needed for someone to burn with and without a particular sunscreen. For example, if it takes 10 minutes to burn unprotected, wearing a SPF 30 should protect the skin up to 30 times longer (300 minutes). Higher SPF means longer protection, however it is still extremely important to look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against UVA as well as UVB.

Just pick up any bottle of shampoo, facial cream, body lotion or any other beauty products and you’re likely to find an incredibly long list of synthetic chemicals — many of them even toxic and cancer causing.  These chemicals enter our bodies – through ingestion (toothpaste, lipstick), skin absorption (lotions, deodorant, makeup) and even inhalation (perfumes, fumes, etc..). Multiply this seemingly small amount by the number of products you use throughout the day, on a daily basis, and over your entire lifetime and you will see how your body is bound to accumulate these toxins over time. The following chemicals are very often found in cosmetic and personal care products:

PARABENS (CHEMICAL PRESERVATIVES)

-          On cosmetic product labels, you will most likely see the following parabens listed: methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben. . The concern with parabens is their known effect to disrupt hormone function, which is linked to an increased risk of breast cancer and reproductive toxicity. Parabens on the skin surface (via lotions, for example) may react with the sun’s UVB rays, aging the skin and causing DNA damage.

PETROCHEMICALS

-          Extremely commonplace in cosmetic products, petrochemicals (by-products of petroleum) are often found in: fragrances, lip gloss (petroleum oil is often used as a base), nail polish, soaps, body lotions.  Petrochemicals are known to cause numerous health issues, ranging from skin rashes to cancer and liver, kidney, and nervous system toxicity. DBP (Dibutyl Phthalate) in particular has been linked with birth defects and lifelong reproductive impairments.

HEAVY METALS

-          Lead is a proven neurotoxin linked to troubles in learning, language, and behavior, as well as miscarriage and reduced fertility in both men and women. Mercury, a toxin readily absorbed by the skin, is linked to nervous system, reproductive, immune and respiratory toxicity, and is especially dangerous during fetal development. Nanoparticles of zinc and titanium dioxide are potentially dangerous when inhaled or absorbed.

FORMALDEHYDE RELEASING PRESERVATIVES

-          DMDM Hydantoin, Urea, and Quaternium-15: these toxins can cause allergic skin reactions, rashes, and are probable carcinogens. Cosmetic products containing formaldehyde releasing preservatives can leak formaldehyde into your body via skin absorption, ingestion, or by releasing formaldehyde into the air you breathe. Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle – these are all ways that we can help reduce the waste, conserve our natural resources, save energy, reduce pollution, and in turn take better care of our environment and our earth.

The first step begins with being more aware of the products that we purchase and aiming to buy recycled materials or products with recycled packaging as often as possible. It is also important to note the percentage of recycled material in any particular packaging. 100% Pure products are packaged with over 90% post-consumer recycled material. Post-consumer recycled materials were once part of a consumer item, and would have otherwise become garbage/solid waste if they had not been recycled and made into 100% Pure packaging.

To go one step further, you can also look out for packaging that is printed with soy ink – made from soybeans, soy ink is much more environmentally friendly than traditional ink because it is non-toxic and naturally low in Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), chemical compounds that can react and enter the earth’s atmosphere, affecting the environment and our health.

When you’re finished with a product, you can either reuse or recycle the packaging. If you’re recycling a plastic container, make sure it is either plastic #2, #4, or #5 (check for the recycling symbol with a number inside somewhere on the packaging), as these are considered safe to reuse. Plastic #1 is also a safe plastic, but not recommended to be reused, so please recycle it instead! 100% Pure is sure to use only safe plastics in our packaging – either Plastic #1, #2, or #5.

Levels of Moisturizers

Different skin types require different levels of hydration and moisturization to reach and maintain its ideal moisture content of 15 – 20%.  Hydrating the skin increases its water content, whereas moisturizing increases levels of oil and essential fatty acids in the skin.  Maintaining moisture and hydration is critical to skin health, vitality, and physical appearance – the more moisture and hydration, the fewer lines, wrinkles and loss of elasticity.  We can help retain the skin’s moisture content by applying the appropriate levels of moisturizers that cater to the unique needs of different skin types.

VERY OILY SKIN:  If you have very oily skin, all you need is a hydrating toner after cleansing to give your skin a drink of water.  If your skin already produces excess oil, you do not need an additional moisturizer.  However, it is always a good idea to use a hydrating eye cream like 100% Pure’s Cucumber Gel Eye Cream because the skin around our eyes do not produce much oil and need additional hydration.  For very oily skin, it is even recommended to use oil blotting sheets throughout the day to keep complexion refreshed.
